New emojis have been added to iOS 17.4 beta, including a phoenix, a lime, smileys nodding up and down, and directional people emojis. These additions follow Unicode’s Emoji 15.1 recommendations from September 2023, totaling 118 new emojis.
The beta introduces six entirely new emoji concepts, four family emojis without gender specifications, and directional versions for six existing people emojis, resulting in 108 new emojis when considering gender and skin tone variations.
The six new emoji concepts are:
– 🙂↔️ Head Shaking Horizontally
– 🙂↕️ Head Shaking Vertically
– 🐦🔥 Phoenix
– 🍋🟩 Lime
– 🍄🟫 Brown Mushroom
– 🔗💥 Broken Chain
Additionally, four new family emojis are included:
– 🧑🧑🧒 Family: Adult, Adult, Child
– 🧑🧒🧒 Family: Adult, Child, Child
– 🧑🧒 Family: Adult, Child
– 🧑🧑🧒🧒 Family: Adult, Adult, Child, Child
However, a bug in the beta causes the selected alternative-direction emojis to invert back to their left-facing counterparts, along with skin tone options. This issue is expected to be resolved in a future beta update before the official release of iOS 17.4.
The release is scheduled for later this spring in the northern hemisphere, with the beta currently available for developers. Based on past iOS beta history, the public release is anticipated in March or April 2024. As with all beta software, designs may undergo changes before the final release, as observed in previous iOS beta versions.
